One question for all you positing the start of the next Civil War...what issue would drive this war? The first Civil War had slavery...what issue will drive this one, you haven't mentioned any up til now. What issue will make people want to pick up a gun and shoot their fellow citizens?

Or, a response to aggressive anti-freedom militants... sort of the same reason the South effectively started the Civil War by seceding. MDDad suggests we won’t start shooting each other, but, then, to what extent WILL we go to defend our families or our freedom? I will start shooting if a gang starts menacingly towards my family... of course, a lot (more) will go into such a decision, but the bottom line for me is, carrying a firearm is one option. |

With all due respect, Dave, what freedoms do you really believe are at risk? You can live where you want, drive what you want, work wherever you are qualified, send your kids to school where you want, vacation where you want, and say what you want. What freedoms are so in peril that you might consider shooting another citizen?
And if the whack-jobs become such a majority that they vote in a whack-job government to implement a whack-job agenda, isn't that exactly the kind of democracy we claim to love and support? Would you consider blowing them away as the appropriate response?
That needs more clarification. Do you mean a violent, criminal street gang. If so, I would start shooting too, although I'd have to borrow some firearms and ammo from my neighbor, who has an arsenal more impressive than the U.S. military. If you mean a gang of rabid liberals, I'm not sure what form the menacing would take. Would they force you to hang an unisex sign on your bathroom doors? Would they take off their pink leather hotpants and rainbow suspenders and throw them at your wife and kids? Would that justify blasting them with an AR-15? Please be more specific.

I don't think anyone here is in the vicinity of being even remotely close to picking up a weapon and opening fire. But I think if you look at the trajectory of what's happening here in CA, and project it further down the road (how far, I don't know), violence among citizens has to be part of the equation at some point if you look at other countries that have been subject to Socialistic rule. Would you feel safe wearing your red MD cap today up in Portland? What happens if they move south across the border? I know the Servite guys will be OK... Just not so sure you would though. |

Once again, before we can go any further, I think you have to define what you mean by socialism. If you mean government ownership of much of the means of production and distribution, such as North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, China (until recently), Laos, etc., I don't think any American is proposing to go down that road. The socialism that people are talking about moving toward is the type practiced in Denmark, Finland and Sweden, which is not socialism at all. Those are fully capitalist countries with private ownership that have opted to tax themselves out the ass in order to implement a cradle-to-grave nanny state. While that vision of the future is anathema to me and to many others here, nobody is doing any shooting in Copenhagen or Helsinki, as far as I know.
