Thought we'd see a mention of Garbers here.
How did he do v. JSerra yesterday?

With two of the top HSF QB's in the nation, with mad pride for the OC..... CDM's Ethan Garbers and Mater Dei's Bryce Young after three weeks played sit atop the yardage and TD pass completions amongst their ELITE 11 peers.

Seeing this kid perform like that against top notch competition, and more importantly, leading his team to a win, is way more impressive than breaking passing records against weaker opponents.
And I understand he's a good guy to boot.

And I understand he's a good guy to boot. Of all the "star" players at Mater Dei in the 18 years I've been there, Bryce is probably the quietest and most shy of any of them. You almost have to squeeze his head to get him to say a few words. So yes, he's a special kid who's impossible not to like.

I hear Nick Saban and Alabama are still in pursuit of Bryce.

Given what seems to be the MO at Cathedral, it's no great mystery why MD was a better fit.
He's really blossomed since his soph year. Says a lot for the coaching he's getting.

No question the coaching at MD is beneficial to any player..., it's why I didn't buy into the notion St. Francis with more D1 guys would beat them. The Maryland boys were a bunch of great individual players no doubt, but as a "team" not so much.

NEVER is it mentioned that kids want to go to a certain school because they think it's a better fit for them for whatever the reason. The implication is always that the school / coaching staff is doing something nefarious to attract / abduct them. Wouldn't surprise me at all if CDM attracts kids simply because of the very good QB's coming out of that school. At the lower levels, look for Western to start attracting QB's as well. Doesn't hurt having a couple D1 WRs to throw to, but they've changed the culture at Western.

Yes the foundation provided by coaches is critical to success, we are very fortunate to now have such support from parents, alum and students to encourage these great coaches to stay on, it really comes down to making a reason (for a public) to a student/athlete as well as coaches and staff to stay instead of always looking for a better pasture or greener field. At CDM I believe it's one of our strengths, tough place to want to leave, yet as we saw last week Coach Meyer did so. Curious how that worked out for him.
That said a school like CDM will always face difficulties in bringing outside talent in. Unless something changes that I don't see CDM would seem to be a perennial D3 or 4 program. Coaching can only take you so far then you need numbers.

The Maryland boys were a bunch of great individual players no doubt, but as a "team" not so much. Here is what I know. There were hard core MD fans, not including me, thought MD would either lose or scrape out a win. Before the game, I texted a Father of one of the players and asked him how here thought the game would go. He told me MD would blow St Francis out unless the Refs helps control the game. Astonished, I asked him why. He said when both teams played each other as youths, his Son's team beat them because of coaching and that the St. Francis players were individuals and wouldn't play with discipline. End of story.

He said when both teams played each other as youths, his Son's team beat them because of coaching and that the St. Francis players were individuals and wouldn't play with discipline. Which raises two questions: (1) How could the two teams have played each other as youths when St. Frances is composed of players from all up and down the eastern seaboard? (2) St. Frances had 6 penalties for 52 yards. Mater Dei had 11 penalties for 129 yards. So which team played with more discipline?
