My dad was told that story by, of all people, Rod Carew. Carew lived a few houses down from my parents in Peralta Hills and my younger sister used to babysit his daughter Michelle on the home games that Ms. Carew went to (nearly all). Rod Carew is as nice and as quiet a guy as he comes across in interviews.

Today most TEAMS don't have 10--much less 14 complete games all season.

Nolan Ryan's number of complete games for the eight years he was with the Angels: 20, 26, 26, 10, 21, 22, 14 and 17. And he only led the league one of those years.
Talk about no need for candy ass relief pitchers. I still think it's possible that one reason so many of today's pitchers have arm problems is because their arms are babied too much.

I don’t know if this is the thread for this, so feel free to move it if needed. 10 years and 1 month ago, Nick Adenhart, Angels pitcher, was killed by a drunk driver the night he pitched his first MLB start of 2009... he started a few games in 2008 but got sent back down to Salt Lake. We will never know what could have been... BTW, the drunk who killed him and his friends got 51 years in prison.

I remember that incident. Not that it matters, but wasn't the driver an illegal alien?

No, he was a 24-year-old US citizen. I looked it up. But, interestingly, I also found out that the sentencing judge who gave him 51 years was Rick Toohey, an old high school and college friend of mine.

The only time in Bill Russell's 13 seasons that the Celtics didn't make the NBA Finals. 11 rings in that span. Wow.

As much as i despise the Celtics (and the Patriots, Red Sox and every person who roots for a Boston team or lives in beantown), those 11 Championships in 13 years is why I consider Bill Russell to be the greatest basketball player in NBA history. For those who claim it was easier due to less teams in the league, the counter argument was there was no dilution of talent. Russell had to go through Chamberlain every year to get those titles. They had to beat the Lakers with Baylor & West to win a bunch of those titles. Every team had a hall of famer on it and Russell was able to make his teammates better in order to win year after year.

There's no way Bill Russell was a better basketball player or center than Wilt Chamberlain.
People always bring out the number of championships won to determine who was the better player. In that event, Robert Horry was better than Elgin Baylor and Jerry West and Karl Malone, etc, etc.
Russell was a superb defender and an excellent role player in the Celtic offense but he was dominated individually by Chamberlain almost every time they met. In regular season games Chamberlain out scored him a 30 -14 and out rebounded him 28-23 with assists about even.
Granted, Chamberlain was more central to his team's offensive scheme and needed to score more, but he could also rebound better. I wouldn't consider Russell even better on the defensive end of the court........................Luca

Laker fan since Jerry West sank that 60 footer against the Knicks. My first ever pro game.
But there wasn't anything more painful than to watch Wilt shoot free throws.

...There's no way Bill Russell was a better basketball player or center than Wilt Chamberlain.........................Luca Wilt had more talent than Russell, but was unable to convert that talent into Championships. IMO, the ability to lead a team to championships is what makes talented players great. The reason games are played is to compete & win, not build up great stat lines. Having great stats & losing makes you Hillary Clinton. Jerry West was one of the most talented & clutch players ever, but Magic was a greater basketball player than him because he led teams to titles. Elgin Baylor's scoring ability was basically useless, it never led to Championships. literally, the day Baylor retired, the Lakers reeled off 33 consecutive wins and then later, their first LA title. You can't be a great player and have a team get better when you retire. You can be a talented player & have that happen, but not a great player. The Robert Horry rebuttal is a moot point because Horry didn't lead his team. It does tell you quite a bit about Horry being a great player in a supporting role, but he was never given the responsibility to lead a team, so it is an apples to oranges comparison.

Do I understand you to say that Jim McMillan was a greater player than Elgin Baylor?

Sorry, RSM, but you couldn't be more wrong on this point. Championships in team sports are a team accomplishment, and Russell played on teams with more very good players than Chamberlain, West, Baylor, or anyone else of that era. All things being equal, I think most basketball experts wouldn't put Bill Russell in their all-time top five, and maybe not even in their top ten.
