Here's a real leader, the President of my own formative years, expounding on some important truths in a speech to evangelical leaders in 1983. In referring to the Soviets, he gives a pretty good thumbnail sketch of the liberal mindset in our own country today.
I think I'll show this to my students.

I've allowed myself to be triggered by AOC also. For me, she personifies the frustration I've had trying to reason with people seemingly hell bent on forwarding policies that hit my pocket book, or make me dependent on gov't for my safety and financial security.
It's the same smug self assuredness that I had previously engaged with in the other board that wound up being the impetus for doing this board. I suppose I should be thanking them for providing the impetus. After all, this is the American way, right?
Once I figure out how to get to the mindset of taking action without my own set of histrionics that seem to follow frustration, I'll be sure to send you all a copy of the book.

I think we can talk about the ideological differences between liberals and conservatives until we're blue in the face, but I think how they behave with those differences is even more fascinating. I formed this opinion almost 30 years ago, and all the time that's passed makes me more and more convinced I was right:
Conservatives just seem to want to be left alone. They are tolerant of others' ideologies as long as it doesn't infringe on them or their rights to believe as they do. Their feeling seems to be: "Go ahead and smoke pot, or marry your sister, or have two dudes get married, or whatever else you want. Just leave me alone to live with my values and beliefs. Let me keep most of what I earn, and I'll take responsibility for my family and their welfare." I've shared that outlook for most of my adult life. Live and let live, although I do have one caveat: If I had a little girl, and she walked into a public restroom at the mall, and some dude walked in after her because he felt like a woman that day, I would not leave well enough alone. That guy would have a major problem with me much larger than his gender confusion, and he'd likely really be woman before he came back out of that john.
Liberals are just the opposite. They are absolutely convinced that they are not only more intelligent and informed than their conservative brethren, but that they are also politically and socially more highly evolved and enlightened. They are the homo sapiens to our Neanderthals. It's what leads to their infuriating attitudes of smugness, superiority and condescension. Furthermore, they believe they know what is best for everyone in every situation, and they insist on forcing their beliefs down everyone else's throats for that reason. It's their way or the highway, and they are convinced they must convert the world to their way of thinking. Everything in America's past is shamed or undercut for the utopia they have in their minds.
I'd like the members here to tell me if I'm on to something, or if I'm full of crap.

No you grabbed onto a few pieces of liberal feces there...! I mean crap!
I cut it like this. Liberals run on emotion. Emotions override logic and common sense. Conservatives are practical and pragmatic, matter of fact. What I personally find most annoying is their notion that they or through government can do better for you than YOU! Overtime I get into with a liberal or a group of them (many of my friends) i always conclude with the question why do you feel obligated to control and advise everyone for THEIR own welfare? I in turn make so such suggestions on how they live their own.

...I'd like the members here to tell me if I'm on to something, or if I'm full of crap. I would vote for both. You are on to something despite being full of crap. I agree with your summary of the differences between right & left, although typically this is where VilePagan chimes in saying you can't stereotype everyone on the left and the Ford makes some comment that he is actually conservative and the whole thing runs off the rails...

Another thing I would add: conservatives think that liberals simply have bad or mistaken ideas; we are willing to concede that they are well-intentioned (mostly). Liberals (or Leftists), on the other hand, increasingly seem to indicate that they truly believe that conservatives are not merely wrong in their prescriptions, but are evil people. We are the deplorables--the racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamaphobic neanderthals who are the only thing standing in the way of their imagined utopia on Earth.

I have to give it up--the amount of mental jiu-jitsu necessary to be a liberal is impressive. Or maybe it's just lack of self-awareness.

I'm guessing more than a few of us here think that Sowell guy has a little insight.
