I’ve been following the efforts to contain the novel coronavirus to China, and it seems to me that I’m missing something here.
There are thousands of known viruses, divided into different families: Adenoviruses, herpes viruses, picorna viruses, etc. etc. And corona viruses. The majority of viruses are more nuisance than deadly. Some are severe like the poliovirus or HIV, but most are self-limited illnesses for normal healthy people.
The coronavirus family is one of the latter. There are at least two exceptions within this large family, but the vast majority of cases are simply upper respiratory illnesses that likely all of us have been infected with before. I haven’t seen any evidence that this novel coronavirus from Husan is any different from those and so I don’t understand the near hysteria about its containment. Obviously it would be nice to have it confined to China and maybe disappear, but there’s no evidence yet that even if it escapes–as it likely will – that it’s any significant threat to humanity. The premature media references to "the deadly coronavirus" are an indicator that some don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.
We're all aware of how poor the mass media can be in reporting political developments. But it’s also true for climatology, science, medicine and other spheres……………………………….Luca

Luca, you know that nothing sells papers, scores rating points or demands internet clicks more than hysteria. The more frightening a story, and the more it can generate hysterical fear, the more money it makes. Every news source in the country knows that, and they leverage it every chance they get. Making this latest virus sound like Ebola, Hanta or Marburg rather than The Tom, Dick And Harry Upper Respiratory Infection Virus, is the way to make bucks. And journalistic honesty and integrity will take a back seat to that every time.

CDC is saying severity ranges from light flu-like symptoms to dying, but also note they are still investigating it and don’t know as much as they want to know. The Chinese, themselves, have already identified and uploaded the Coronavirus-20@9 genome into the various health organizations websites.
Several comments on the CDC website equate Coronavirus2019 with MERS and SARS outbreaks, but do not do so in discussions about severity.

I can't believe you are all not taking this serious. Most likely, the Coronavirus originated from a bat. Do you realize what that means? As the infection spreads, there will be hordes of vampires and crime fighting vigilantes flooding the streets, looking for someone to bite or turn over to Capt. Gordon. Worse case scenario has 45 million people with teeth marks on their neck and the rest of us in prison for a crime we didn't commit.

As Luca pointed out in the opening post;

These virus' are ALWAYS AND EVERYWHERE changing, mutating & adapting in their interactions with other life-forms, they're always changing.
The data I have seen tell me that this isn't something to panic about. About two percent mortality .. MAYBE. This will change as we get more information. But people are NOT dropping like flies from this. It is killing the old and weak like all bad flu/cold virus' do at variable rates.
It's just another opportunity for the media ( govt ? ) to distract and panic people.
It will eventually disappear as a story is my prediction. It's not a spreading 99.9% fatal "Captain Trips" - as the disease in Stephen Kings "The Stand" was called.
Just another item to make people worried for awhile. Show them how "helpful" their "government" is.
Noise about nothing.
Watch.

I’m sure you’re wrong, Cap’n. if this really is nothing to worry about, it would mean the media is sensationalizing a common flu. They wouldn’t do that just to sell newspapers, would they!

We've already seen new microbiologies used to try to panic everyone... yearly Then of course there's the globalwarmingclimatechangewe'reallgonnadiein12years foolishness - which is maybe becoming less & less effective. Always something isn't there ? Right now there's the whole TrumpisHitler stuff to keep the fools dancing, ... so, who knows what's next LOL

I'm sure as well.
Uh huh...what's the reason for the Chinese locking down several cities and all the quarantine stuff and the Universities postponing the start of the semester and all the rest that's going on over there...are they trying to sell papers or are they responding to a serious epidemic?
I go with the latter.

We haven't seen "serious epidemic" scares recently or anything.
Believe what you want pagan. Hide in your basement and wear a hazmat suit when you DO venture out among the plague threatened population.
This will turn into another forgotten story like the rest of them. These virus' mutate evolve change all the time. There is nothing new here. People still get a cold, people still get the flu because ..these virus' mutate evolve change all the time. There is nothing new here.
Nothing new except the new media trend of desperately searching for ways to panic, irritate or scare people.... maybe that's not so new either.

He just enjoys being an irritant, seeing what reactions he can get. In the meantime, there are things in the news taking this silly "bug news" over. As I said, it will disappear until the next thing the media finds to see if they can scare us or drive us nuts.

The local Chinese response is appropriate given that this is a new variety of virus and it would be far preferable to suppress it in place rather than have it reach the outside world and become another common viral illness. And until they know for certain that it is nothing more than a typical corona virus, taking local precautions is appropriate. What is inappropriate is the media hysteria and the references to "the deadly corona virus" when with rare exceptions corona virus is simply a self limited viral URI.
Some of the local high schools in South Orange County have a number of Chinese foreign students and the overreaction would be comical if it weren't so time-consuming...............................Luca

You guys don't have a clue, do you? This is all an attempt by Trump to distract from the impending doom awaiting him in the Senate.
After he finished making all the leaves fall off the trees back in October, he had to come up with something else. So this racist attack is what he came up with. He also had a secondary motive for his racist attack...to take out his political rival Andrew Yang.
And to make matters worse, he'll probably cause us to get into WWIII with China over this biological warfare.
Wake up people!

Seems like an awful lot of people dying, and ships, planes, for it to be a big nothing burger.
