The frosh pitcher Grothues throws a complete game today at Bosco, six days after out-dueling OLU's starter by tossing seven shutout innings, also on the road.

Unfortunately, Servite can't get one of the league's top three playoff spots, because even if they win tomorrow's final game, they will end up tied for third with the loser of the final SM/JS game. Both of those teams beat Servite head to head.

Hopefully we can get an at-large playoff berth.

Some of our players I talked to Friday said we're pretty much a lock to get at at-large berth, though I'd imagine it will be a tough draw.

Two seasons ago we won at Cypress in a similar 1st Round matchup, so it's a possibility.

There is no question anything can happen and that one position can really dictate the outcome of just ONE game. I think baseball is the one sport on any given day the lesser team CAN win. There is always a 8-16 seed team that has a top prospect ACE, if they do they can compete in a close game with any top seed at this level. Will they advance, not likely as they go back to a rotation that is average as the team as a whole is average. So they won't go far but they can win a game, upset in the making. Baseball to me is the strangest elimination sport.

You're right. Unlike football or basketball (let's add volleyball to that) where the dominant teams are almost guaranteed to get the championship finals, baseball in the single-elimination format is very chancy. Soccer is similarly difficult to navigate. The top seeds in baseball are lucky to go all the way. In 2017 we lost at home in the 2nd Round to a Huntington Beach Oilers squad with two MLB 1st round draft picks, who then promptly lost a few days later in the quarters. OLU was as good as anyone last year but didn't make the finals.

Its like NHL hockey, throw out the records and regular season a HOT goalie can take you all the way. In HS Baseball you want to be the underdog on the day the top seed is forced to pitch its 3rd or 4th man in the rotation..., then capitalize!
