I'm not sure how SK80 missed it, but former Oakland A's all-star pitcher and Corona del Mar alumnus Matt Keough died last week at the age of 64.

Keough suffered one of the greatest tragedies that can happen to a professional athlete. No, I'm not talking about getting hit by a baseball in spring training. I'm referring to his marrying a playboy playmate and in a few short years, having her become a raspy voiced, middle linebacker on a trashy reality show. Talk about a bait & switch!!

Looks like Matt Keough's dad was an even greater athlete than his son.

Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but about 10 or 12 years ago, my sons and I (all big Seinfeld fans) actually celebrated Festivus in place of Christmas. We had an 8-foot aluminum fence pole in the garage that we sanded down and painted a gloss forest green. We placed it in the Christmas tree stand in front of the living room window facing the street. Then we wrapped it in silver and gold garlands and about a mile's worth of tiny Christmas lights. Our traditional white angel was the topping, and it actually looked pretty cool when it was all lit up at night. Some neighbors who knew what it was got a huge kick out of it, while others were quite upset.

How can one not watch MODERN FAMILY! it came out behind my back, in a way: We had already gotten rid of broadcast TV so what we were left with was Netflix for a spell, which didn’t carry it. Once some of the subscription channels did ick it up, too late: I’d already moved on to something else.
