Dave, we have gone back and forth over whether California or Illinois is the most rotten state in the union. I found out two things this weekend that I think will end the debate.
(1) Everyone knows how badly Gavin Newsom and his cronies have screwed up the distribution of Covid vaccines in this state. In a quiet admission of their incompetence, Newsom contracted with Blue Cross/Blue Shield to take over administration of that distribution from the state. What I didn't know was that he awarded that contract to Blue Cross/Blue Shield on a no-bid solicitation. No other organization had the opportunity to bid on that job. And guess which organization was the single biggest financial contributor to Newsom's gubernatorial campaign in 2018? That's right, none other than Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Besides being utterly incompetent, this guy is as rotten and corrupt as they come. Richard Daly and the old Chicago machine have nothing on him.
(2) A friend of mine works for a company that has a maquiladora just south of Tijuana in Mexico. He travels down there once or twice a month because he's responsible for part of the operation from a regulatory standpoint. Like many maquilas, this one has a small commissary on site where factory employees can buy certain goods. On his last couple of his trips, my friend noticed many of them were paying with California EDD cards. When asked, they volunteered that they applied for them, even with Mexican home addresses, and were granted the cards. So not only is my state sending unemployment money to prisoners in Florida, they are also sending it to Mexican nationals who have never lived or worked in the United States and are currently employed.
The ball's in your court, Illinois Boy, but I think the fat lady has sung.

The ball's in your court, Illinois Boy, but I think the fat lady has sung. I would contest #1 as we are competitive: OUR governor, Jabba the Hut, not only screwed up delivery of the vaccine, but was involved in that “mistake” that misplaced thousands of vaccines. AND he has a sizable ownership interest in the manufacturer of those vaccines. However, we probably have something similar to #2, but not that has made it into the public eye. We are #2 in inept state government but I’m certain we won’t stop trying. I’m just happy there is no one representing New York here. (BTW, did you catch the uproar resulting from Biden firing the state’s attorney investigating our state government corruption?) we could still take this!

So does this mean that the Unions have guaranteed they will go back to teaching so long as they get their vaccines? Doubtful.
But hey, at least Newsom gets the backing of the Union on the recall.

I can't believe there isn't one public school principal or district head in this entire state who has the balls to say, "Our schools will open one week from today because all the science says it is safe. We will require masks on adults and children over 10, and we will social distance. We will not rework our ventilation systems. Any teacher or other employee who does not report for work on that first day will be considered to have resigned or retired, and they will be replaced. Thank you for your service."

I also did a little reading about the California bullet train over the last couple of days, and discovered several rather surprising things. For example:
(1) The average cost of a mile of rail to California taxpayers for this boondoggle is roughly $200 million. In France, the average cost is $15 million.
(2) The powers that be for this project are close to deciding to decrease the number of rail lines from two to one in order to cut costs and save money. Hmm, let's think about that for a minute. A train heading south from central California at 200 miles per hour. A train heading north from southern California at 200 miles per hour on the same track. What could possibly go wrong?

That's really bizarre. It almost seems like Newsom is throwing in the towel. First, it's ridiculously stupid coming on the heels of the French Laundry fiasco. Second, George Lopez is about as relevant as last week's garbage. He's not exactly hot and trendy. And third, the best restaurant in Fresno is probably an Arby's, so why would Newsom be caught dead dining in that town?

Probably was there to discuss the bullet train through Fresno, now that the $1.9 trillion "Covid relief" bill includes pork that may come their way.

There's already a commuter train that goes from Bakersfield to all parts north. Again, given the fact the central valley is predominantly low density population farm land, what was the STATED rationale for adding another one?

Newsom is claiming that he was not eating indoors.
I can’t remember the last time I went to a restaurant to not eat (or drink)
Does this guy think we’re stupid. Yes, yes he does.

I hate to be the one to bring this up, but here's a very likely outcome of the recall effort:
(1) Covid cases, hospitalizations and deaths continue to plummet because the disease has run its course. (2) Newsom takes credit for the "victory", saying it was his steadfast leadership in the face of constant criticism that led to our coming out of this plague. (3) The majority of California voters believe his story, because they're either Democrats or stupid, and Newsom sweeps through the recall election in a stunning victory.

Doubt any Republicans support Newsom, but as you have said all along, need Dems to support the recall. Not confident it happens.
