I really did have high hopes for Madden. The problem is that Madden can't pitch. The team ERA is 5.02, the worst in the major leagues. The real problem is Arte Moreno, who keeps hiring GM's with no experience to rebuild his team. When you have a patient who needs brain surgery, you don't hire kids right out of high school to operate. They don't know how to do it. But he gave the Cubs the WS... he had a good run with Tampa Bay... but mostly, I was hoping something would have rubbed off from all those years working with Scoscia. obviously a false hope, as it turns out.

What could have rubbed off on Madden from all those years of working with Scioscia that would make a difference today? Nothing that is wrong with this Angels team is his fault, and he didn't put together this roster of rag-armed pitchers. You can't bake a chocolate cake with dog shit.

Smack to the NL yet again........ AL ALL STARS ROCK !! I rejoiced with the win, but did not watch out of protest for moving it to Colorado. I'm certain they noticed my absence.

He's the consulate player... I understand he even played the outfield yesterday. my concerns are 1. We will waste him on a mediocre team so he will want to leave (sooner rather than later) like we've wasted Trout; 2. He will injure himself more easily and often going both ways like that. But, while it lasts, it is a joy to watch him.

That all might be true, but might he really be the greatest of all time?

That all might be true, but might he really be the greatest of all time? SO far, with only the one trip to the DL, yes, I think he is bearing that out... but I don't want to see him wasted as an Angel, only to get to another team to really blossom...

I guess what I'm really trying to say is that no one has done what he has done on the diamond before.

I think what we're seeing in Ohtani is absolutely unique, and comparisons to Babe Ruth are unfounded. Ruth was one of the best pitchers in the American League from 1915 to 1918, averaging 19 1/2 wins a year with a 2.05 ERA. However, during those years, he averaged only five home runs and 28 RBI's while hitting .301. He did not become a legendary hitter until he stopped pitching, while Ohtani is doing them both at the same time.

Given that he had to play night games and face integrated pitching staffs, the case could easily be made that Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter of all time. And a similar case could be made for Roger Clemens being the greatest pitcher of all time, or at least since Walter Johnson a hundred years ago. Yet because neither of them could keep the needle out of their ass, they both failed to make the Hall of Fame today in their last year on the ballot. Sometimes things turn out as they should.
