As a rule I have some real misgivings about these types of announcements; it seems symptomatic of the over-publicity and "look-at-me" nature of H.S. sports. I'm crying foul on myself, however, for this shameless plug since Jake is one of my students. Not sure if he'll end up at Princeton since more traditional football powers will surely be calling.
Hope to see him play a big role in the Friars turnaround next season. "Fifita to Overman for the TD" has a nice ring to it.

St. John Bosco is a complete freakshow and farce of a football program. They're not even pretending anymore.

I get the sense that Mater Dei has been chastened by the transfer experience of last year (MDDad, any insights here?).
Negro's Braves are just doubling down, however, on libido dominandi, the lust to dominate. [ St. Augustine, City of God ]

[ St. Augustine, City of God ] I was actually going to compliment Mater Dei on their seemingly changed attitude towards transfers, but I see there are posts on TOB that indicate that may not be the case, with three more star players allegedly about to check in.

RSM, dude, this is one you're not going to win. So much like in the debate over the origins and nature of rights, we can either decide to disagree, or you can just admit that you're wrong. Being a Servite guy, that should come as second nature. Folks not born in California are not allowed to use the word "dude". Actually, having graduated from Servite taught me that there are others in the world, outside ones sphere of influence, who aren't as mentally proficient as the people we deal with on a daily basis. An example is Mater Dei & its supporters, who have yet to figure out that a jockstrap is not to be worn on ones football helmet. We must help these poor souls, as stubborn as they may be, see the error in the ways. It is our cross to bear and you sir are the pig that I'm trying to teach how to tell time.

If jockstraps on helmets help a team win two consecutive national championships, maybe that's something Servite should try. Their jockstraps certainly aren't doing them any good where they are now.

Jockstraps on helmets don't help teams win, recruiting non-catholics athletes to play at a Catholic high school does. After wasting that talent for most of that century and falling flat year after year, you must be so proud to have finally won a state championship. Cheating ain't easy, you guys earned those titles...

Here is an example of why I reserve greatness for those who lead their team to titles.
As a freshman at Mater Dei, we were told that Matt Barkley was a great young quarterback. Big arm, very smart, good head on his shoulders, he was deemed great from the get-go. He started as a freshman and was even awarded an Athlete of the Nation award his junior year. His skills meant he had to be great. He played on a loaded Mater Dei team for 4 years, but somehow never won a title or even appeared in a title game in any of those years.
No problem, he was off to USC to again start as a freshman, because with his skills, he had to be great. His athletic ability was easy to see, he was the kind of young man every parent would be proud of. His junior year he rang up some wonderful numbers and the Trojans, banned from bowl consideration thanks to Pete Carroll, finished the season ranked number 6. It was all coming together for his senior year, this great quarterback on a great team returning alot of starters, were ranked number 1 in the preseason polls. They were destined to be champions of at least the Pac South, if not the entire NCAA Division 1. Instead, they ended up 7-6, wining only 1 game after October 20th.
Still, even the professional scouts thought he might be great, getting drafted by the Eagles and making the team as a backup. Only then, when he couldn't separate himself from others by relying on physical talent alone, was the veneer of greatness peeled off. This fine young man with great talent and a wonderful work ethic was not a great player. He couldn't lead a team, even teams with more talent than any other, to a championship, be it at the high school, college or pro level.
Yet many Monarch believers still call Matt Barkley a great quarterback...

Well, it hasn't worked for the Friars.
After wasting that talent for most of that century and falling flat year after year,
Really? For a hundred years?
you must be so proud to have finally won a state championship.
Not really. Any pride comes from starting the recruiting, vanpooling and "tuition assistance" battle five or six years after the rest of the league, and then showing them how it's done.
Cheating ain't easy, you guys earned those titles.
Actually, cheating is very easy. It's the titles that are hard. Servite found both of those things out last year.

Matt Barkley played on teams that had some of the most pathetic defenses in Rollo's tenure at the school.

Any pride comes from starting the recruiting, vanpooling and "tuition assistance" battle five or six years after the rest of the league, and then showing them how it's done. My bad on the first one, I meant to write "most of this century". But really now, saying Mater Dei is having to "catch up" on cheating? C'Mon Man!! Mater Dei's football program led the recruitment charge 35 years ago when they made a decision born out of jealousy to become a sports academy that used Catholicism as a cover to get athletes they normally wouldn't have access to. Unfortunately, all of the other parochial schools eventually followed suit in one way or another, forgoing the mission for which they were established. Servite, St. Paul, SM, J Serra, Bosco, all have chosen to follow Mater Dei to the dark side. Some like Bosco have chosen to go all-in like Mater Dei, others seem to have moments of clarity and try to just dip their toes in the pool of recruitment. Half in, half out, they are still just as guilty. All of these parochial schools, along with OLu & Mission Viejo, should just quit the act and declare themselves full on sports academies. Tilt the curriculum towards related fields (sports marketing, sports medicine), I'd respect them a bit if they did. Instead, they hide behind religion (or in the case of Mission Viejo, a farm program) and just find new ways to cheat every year while their fan base pretends their dominance over all other schools is because of superior training methods or some other gobblygook. These schools are now like the 63 year old Newport Beach woman who has been stretched, injected and tucked, but has the gall to tell other women that her youthful looks come from working out & eating right.

Matt Barkley played on teams that had some of the most pathetic defenses in Rollo's tenure at the school. How could they be pathetic when they had all the best players money could buy? I don't recall the Mater Dei defense going 9 for 23 with 5 interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) against Tesoro in Barkleys last game as a high schooler. So now, not only does a player as "great" as Matt Barkley need the best offense to win, he needs the best defense to win? Doesn't it make more sense that all these "great" Mater Dei & Mission Viejo QB's that go to USC and then fail miserably in the pros are not great quarterbacks, rather just talented young men who were on loaded teams in high school & college that hid all of their deficiencies?
