It may be of interest to some who follow the Trinity League, but in yesterday's 4-Vertical Championship Tournament at the Great Park in Irvine, Mater Dei again won the Division I and Division 2 titles in the 7th/8th grade grouping. Their Stripers team beat Mission Viejo in the D-1 final, and MD's Pride team beat Corona del Mar in D-2. Perhaps significantly, in 4-Vertical's top division of ten teams, Servite and the two Bosco entries finished 8th, 9th and 10th in league play this season. In yesterday morning's pool games, those three teams also failed to qualify for the afternoon playoffs. Bick, I think we need to add a " dislike" feature for this post.

In yesterday morning's pool games, those three teams also failed to qualify for the afternoon playoffs. Spoiler alert! Mater Dei's future is bright. I noticed a couple of other things: 1. Servite was unbeaten for the first two weeks (4 games), and winless for the last three weeks (six games). Perhaps some athletes didn't play in the second half of the season? 2.Anyway, since it may be of interest to some who follow the Trinity league. Servite, who finished 8th in their standings, with a 3-6-1 record, was 1-1-1 against the other two Trinity League schools. They Tied MD's Champion Stripers 8-8, Lost to MD's Pride team 13-32, and defeated Bosco's Blue team 19-12.(Servite did not play Bosco's Gold team). 3. For some reason, despite both Bosco and Mater Dei having two teams each, only one game occurred between them. MD Stripers 32-6 over Bosco Gold team.

MDDad, you would know more about this than I, but how long have these leagues been active and how many of the kids playing for the sponsoring schools actually end up enrolling as freshmen?

4-Vertical started in 2012, and the vast majority of kids who play on the teams end up enrolling in the sponsoring schools. And yes, everything about this league violates the "no pre-enrollment contact" rules in the CIF's Blue Book...especially when you have varsity head coaches like Chad Johnson and Troy Thomas on the field helping coach these kids.

Geez, what's next--high school commitment days in 3rd grade? I'd love to see us all draw down our arms but we know that's not happening any time soon.

The next thing to come down the pike might be private schools that enroll grades 6 to 12 on the same campus. For example, could you see J Serra Jr High and J Serra HS on the same campus? How would the CIF handle that?

Geez, what's next--high school commitment days in 3rd grade?
For the past several years there have already been 8th-graders announcing on Facebook or Twitter where they are next "going to take their talents". The only thing missing is the three hats sitting in front of them before they dramatically make their choice, and it's only going to get worse. It's absolutely pathetic.
The next thing to come down the pike might be private schools that enroll grades 6 to 12 on the same campus. How would the CIF handle that?
Many of the smaller private schools are already 6 though 12, or even kindergarten through 12. The CIF has no authority to "handle that" because the member schools haven't addressed it as an issue. And as long as it's limited to the smaller privates, they probably won't. But it's only a matter of time.
I thought Sierra canyon already does that.
Sierra Canyon is actually preschool through 12th grade. That's why it's called Sierra Canyon School rather than Sierra Canyon High School. If they remain as dominant in high school basketball as they are now, maybe they will be the case that brings the issue to the fore.

Among Servite's victims were Corona Centennial, St. Francis (twice), Charter Oaks, Quartz Hills, Los Altos, and Fullerton, as the Friars finished 7-0.
Also in the Charter Oaks Tourney were Bishop Amat, Rancho Cucamonga, Norco, Colony, Chino Hills, Corona Santiago, La Serna, Mira Costa, Rosemead, Murietta Mesa, Ayala, Monrovia, Bassett, San Gabriel, Arcadia and Crespi.
According to Eric Sondheimer, the Friars were led by QB Noah Fifita, and CB Noah Avinger. Star TE Jake Overman missed the tournament to visit Vanderbuilt.

Nice to see some of our young Servite kids getting some attention, but the thing that really matters is Trinity League wins. The rubber hits the road in October.

better late than never....... Intriguing Carson offensive lineman Shancco Matautia enrolls at Servitewww.ocregister.com/2019/05/24/intriguing-carson-offensive-lineman-shancco-matautia-enrolls-at-servite/Intriguing sophomore offensive lineman Shancco Matautia of Carson (6-2, 300) has enrolled at Servite, Friars football coach Troy Thomas confirmed. Thomas said it’s unclear whether Matautia projects to be a starter in the fall but the coach is excited to see how he develops. “He’s definitely in the mix (at offensive line),” Thomas said of Matautia after the Friars’ recent college showcase. “I think he can play all positions. He’s very athletic. He’s got a chance to be a very good o-lineman. … He moves.” Thomas said Matautia also could play defensive line. Offensive line should be a position of strength for the Friars, who open the season at J.W. North on Aug. 30 before playing at Bishop Gorman of Nevada on Sept. 7.

Well, well, well. So the recruiting machine at Servite is at it again. It's absolutely ridiculous that the CIF continues to allow Servite to poach other schools' top players, something they've been doing since the first time Troy Thomas was head coach. I'm sure that growing up in Carson with all his Polynesian friends, young Shancco had always dreamed of being Friar.
And it's also not surprising that Eric Sondheimer didn't tweet a word about this shameful move.
