Always been a fan of schools that achieve a lot with relatively limited resources or access to Xfers, and CDM's steady rise over the past 15 years is a testament to what's possible with consistently strong leadership.
My first exposure to CDM Football was a 2006 playoff game v Cypress when Taylor Hughes was the QB, Dick Freeman the HC, and they were playing 2nd fiddle to Laguna Hills and were on par with University in the PCL. Cypress won that game, but a lot has changed since that time.
As we sit today, CDM has become one of the top programs in the county while those other 3 programs are in D7, 11 & 12 without a whole lot changing in the demographic landscape of those 4 schools.
Well done CDM.

Thanks for stepping up Bick as I was going to find it hard to not point out my fellow "Sunset Man" picking San Clemente by 3 in our pool.... even MDDad is still not believer in what CDM is actually putting out on the field with his CDM by 1!
I was as certain as one can be in HSF that CDM was making this a "statement" game as there was much focus on these two excellent OC public programs. I believe also the Sea Kings not only won the game but stole the moniker that San Clemente seemed to won, "One Town One Team". In his post game interview with Sondheimer coach Dan O' Shea, “Every single kid on the roster lives in Newport Beach,” O’Shea said. “I think that’s the reason they want to be part of the program.”
Where CDM goes on from here I don't know, but if you listen to coach, (and what SK80 been tellin' ya'll for some time now) CDM Football under strong leadership has set a goal..., "Ever since we got here there is one single thing we preach, we want to be the best public high school program in the county." ~ Coach Dan O' Shea
You tell again coach...! And thank you Jonathan Khamis for providing video of high school football in Orange County.

It's been interesting to watch the rise of CDM over the last few years. That's the way it has historically been in HSFB. You need a combination of an unusually talented influx of legitimate students combined with a good coach and you'd have a strong program for a few years until the stream randomly dries up or the coach leaves, etc. Fountain Valley, then Edison, then Los Alamitos, then Newport Harbor, etc. "It's the circle/the circle of life" "as Musafa and Elton John always said.
Because CDM still plays traditional HSFB they've become one of my favorite teams to watch now. I've developed so much apathy for scripted Trinity league/club football that I don't pay much attention, let alone go to games anymore. If CDM didn't play so far away on a Friday night I'd go to some of their games. Garbers sounds terrific With his completion percentage and yardage................................Luca

Thanks for the sentiment Luca, it's hard for me to always put out there what I see as being an alum it's usually considered simply "homer-ism" rather than rational emotionless reporting, discussing debating on these forums I visited for years. Your point of the cycles whether its players or community or coaching or administration that too me was HSF. Watching a great senior class graduate and knowing you probably had a few down years coming was part of the sport, or at least the reality or experience, something that came with the territory. Today we so more of a game played off the field than on. Why wait it out for a potential star Frosh kid when you can reload NOW with a more ready player so not to skip a beat. I honestly can't say in this new era how a team like CDM will move forward. Will they stick with the "home grown" moniker or like SC "One Town One Team"? I certainly would be happy if they did as I get more enjoyment from that. And I would be happy as well as to be a perennial D3,4 or 5 team. There is really no sense for a public school with limit geo and eco boundaries to try and pretend to be D1. Or is there? Calling coach O' Shea! I do want to point out however success for CDM has been around longer than you would believe. Here is a recent article on the anniversary of the great late 80"s teams. www.ocregister.com/2018/09/10/corona-del-mar-celebrate-first-cif-football-title-won-30-years-ago/ CDM had some really great years in the 90's as well. There was a period in the early 2000's where mediocrity became acceptable and that was coaching by choice. What really started the big move forward was in 2007-8 hiring Jason Hitchens, then Scott Meyer and now Dan O' Shea and staff which is simply excellent. OC Kevin Hettig is having the time of his life coaching this offense. And heck O' Shea somehow (WTF) brought in ex Super Bowl Champ New England Patriot Shea McClellin as linebacker coach this season. Doesn't appear to me CDM is going forward with this build not back.

As a supporter, objectivity is pretty much by definition not truly achievable. Why not just celebrate your homerism? You'll get checked here when you cross the line of acceptability.

I didn't catch this article last week when it was printed..... but another one which tells there is more than a 5 star talent that makes a team click and ultimately win. Interesting insight on the recruiting process for high school talent and one that does not seem to be going too well for UCLA. UCLA is struggling on the football field and in recruiting www.latimes.com/sports/ucla/story/2019-10-02/ucla-is-struggling-on-the-football-field-and-in-recruiting
Chip Kelly sat in the Orange County high school classroom and made his pitch for the trio of prospects.
“He goes, ‘I want these kids bad,’ ” Corona del Mar football coach Dan O’Shea recalled of the 90-minute conversation with his UCLA counterpart. “ ‘They’re the type of kids I’m looking for; they’d be great fits for the program.’ ”
O’Shea could only nod in agreement. Tight end Mark Redman, quarterback Ethan Garbers and wide receiver John Humphreys were all 4.0 students at one of the best academic high schools in California. They were also incredibly gifted football players, ranked among the top 10 in the nation at their positions.
Landing one of the players would have been a recruiting coup for the talent-starved Bruins, and two or three a bonanza.
~
UCLA had pursued Redman fairly early, O’Shea said, but was several months behind other suitors on Garbers and Humphreys, even though both players were widely coveted prospects with excellent grades. O’Shea said the players were “tickled pink” to be offered by UCLA but had already developed unbreakable bonds with the schools they ultimately chose.
Why weren’t the Bruins in the mix earlier?
“They’re more selective,” O’Shea said of UCLA’s recruiting approach. “Oregon is offering 500 guys and [UCLA is] offering 50 guys.”

A few interesting facts about John Humphreys:
He now has 225 career receptions, breaking the county record of 212 set by Jeremy Childs of Los Alamitos. He is 5th on the all-time CIF list, 60 behind Trent Irwin of Hart
He now has 4,057 career receiving yards, breaking the county record of 3,181 set by Tony Hartley of Los Alamitos. He is 4th on the all-time CIF list, 1,215 yards behind Trent Irwin of Hart.
He now has 61 touchdown receptions, breaking the county record of 44 set by Amon-ra St. Brown of Mater Dei. He is 3rd on the all-time CIF list, 8 behind Marquis Spiker of Murrieta Valley.
With potentially eight games remaining, he has a realistic chance at setting new CIF records in receptions and TD's.

Thnx 4 the stats yet again MDStatDad! The question is will he be playing much over the next two games? He didn't even suit last game against FV. "Precautionary" is the word being used, I also know that they are only focused on CIF and coming in 100% healthy and rested.

Looks like CDM is a 3 point favorite over the Tars tomorrow night. The Newport Harbor side (port side) of the field was sold out in 6 hours on Monday and the Newport Harbor store inside the John Wayne airport is sold out of everything.

Biggest game in Orange County tomorrow night? (Battle of the Mercenaries is happening in Bellflower...)

With all due respect Credo, it's funny that you refer to a school like Mater Dei as the Mercenaries, in light of the fact that Servite has had more mercenaries on its football team in each of the last six years.
