Focus on the words "nearly carried" for the answer
Just wow .. so many things to address in the last few posts ... I'll get back to ya'll in about 4 weeks after my playoff gigs. Some of us may not be good enough for the NFL but I'm going to go deep into CIFSS HS playoffs. That's a big deal to some of us. By the way, our Orange County Chapter has more officials in Division 1 (17) and the NFL (8 current and former) than any chapter in the US. That's due to the level of play we officiate in OC. Soooo, we have that going for us.
In the meantime, READ the WHOLE Rule Book, skip Rule 1 because everyone knows how to wear their uniforms legally, right? Start at rule 2 Definitions, then hit Rule 7 .. all of it. Backtrack from there. Now throw in a little judgement a pinch of football philosophy and see if you can figure it out until I can come back and draw a picture for you. Good luck in the playoffs.
One thing I will defend are the officials .. same crap every year. We're showing up and doing the work. So way off on reasons officials make bad calls (mistake, lapse in judgement, impartiality, whatever it may be), and why games last 3 1/2 hours or why officials throw flags. How would YOU know .. LMFAO. I respect the members of this thread but The comments on "IF this IF that" about officials are disrespectful and wrong. I've tried to bring some understanding of the vocation, but you don't care. Same crap and arguments that get old after a few seasons. It's called being human and not perfect. And you're right MDDad, we do need officials. When can I expect your application? We still need officials. You seem to know how and why things are called, so step up. We've had to put guys on the field that have had the spring and passing league experience only. Assuredly not in the higher profile games but it is what it is and they show up. The best of us make mistakes, so far this year I boned an OPI call in overtime and almost lost a down, which has happened a couple of times this year. The guy who made the aforementioned call on the catch/no catch is a 32 year veteran. During the spring season, I got the feeling that we were finally getting appreciated for showing up every game, doing the dirty work and being part of the solution. Nope, same old story .. total ignorance of the reasons we do it and the way we do it. You want to learn about rules and mechanics, okay I'm with you .. but I'm not going to hang and listen to ignorant people degrade officials. Adios.
