Zebra- what is the reroute rule in high school football. As far as I know there is no 5 yard rule. Some questions are coming up about when contact is legal or not. I haven’t seen any rule changes. What’s the deal? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk See your PM's

This was in Steve Fryers mid season report - OCVarsity today. Very unfortunate state of affairs....
Fryer: A look at the first half of the football season, and predictions for what’s ahead
"Officials are getting confronted by parents as they leave fields after games. The refs do make mistakes and this seems to be the year in which, more than ever before, 15-yard penalties are marked off as 14- or 16-yard penalties. Parents need to get themselves under control and athletic directors must make sure their school provides the officials with ample security."

Breakdown of fouls from my game Friday night ... the school names were withheld to protect the guilty. Team 1 is the home team. I am in position H on the table. Of the 16 flags I had, 13 were non-judgement calls which are considered coaching fouls. Out of all the crew fouls, 69% were coaching fouls (encroachment, false start, stupid personal foul stuff) I was hearing coaches and parents yelling about "letting the kids play" .. It's week 6 ... the "kids" should be able to line up correctly or not lose their cool or know when you can and cannot hit a defenseless player. This has been a nightmare year for younger coaches NOT knowing the basic rules or debating with me whether they can go on the field and call plays or be in the restricted zone. The previous 4 years before this season I've thrown 2 sideline warnings, in 4 years! This season I've thrown one every game and have 3 flags for sideline interference. You gotta run into someone to call that. These "educators" that are coaching are failing to follow instructions and when we crack down on them, they get butthurt. Is there any truth to the notion the more physical teams draw the most flags?
Mater Dei gets more than their share of flags, and it seems Los Al is getting the same treatment

Well, actually it would depend on what flags we are talking about. But, with personal fouls, holding and unsportsmanlike fouls, what happens is the cheap shots and over zealousness of the players happens more with more physical teams. Some teams are coached that way or use the excuse of "just playing until the whistle". Some teams have crappy line formations on purpose, some teams can't count to 2 or get set for a second on a shift. Orrrr ... a team is so unskilled that they have to hold or use intimidation as a tactic ... again, some teams are coached that way. Lots of reasons to call a foul but being a physical team isn't one of them. Can you show me numbers that show MD gets more than their share and what is that threshold number? The fact that it "seems" like Los Al is getting the same treatment is a bit subjective, again, show me some comparable stats. The opposite side coach wrote to our review board and said I called 90% of the fouls in the game ... it was 45% but he's probably a gym teacher and just doubled it. So, I go by the stats I know ... not what I think. Thinking has never been my strong suit anyway.

Thru 7 games, Los Al has 73 flags for 765 yds
Opponents have 41 for 311.
MDDad might be able to share what their experience has been
Is it proof positive... No. Just my sense after 17 years watching this stuff.

When you are good or dominating its easy for human nature to get the best of one and throw some rope or charity to the lesser.

I coached for 25 years, had no clue of the game from the stripped POV, officiated 24 ... You people really need to put on stripes and walk your talk ... you just have zero clue. You have notions and feelings .. Don't have a breakdown of those penalties by chance. Just want to check my experience that it's not who is the more physical team, it's the team that flat out fouls more and what are those fouls. Safety fouls are always called ... encroachment by a losing in a 45-0 ballgame in the 4th quarter isn't. There're philosophies behind things that but to say that we have a sub-conscious bias is just plain ridiculous. But I get it. Y'all have been watching for 67 combined years ... watching ... LOL.

just like there is holding on every play, anyone as well can look the other way. i often chat with ref crews and do try to see the game thru their eyes or in their shoes. many a time that the pre game better take a leak restroom talk! and I always wish each and every guy wearing a zebra suit, "Have a good game"!

Well actually I HAVE put on the stripes as one of my first jobs, and as much as I wanted to remain impartial, I think I WAS influenced by both the aggressiveness of one team v. the other as well as the score. Not to cherry pick, but play #94 last week seems to be an example of this. To Sk80's point, we are penalized significantly more in lopsided games v. closer ones. Not enough of a sample size to hang your hat on, but Western's coach says they are penalized significantly more than the opponents they're now blowing out in the Orange league Western (63-25): Us 10/113; them 3/30 Newport (62-14): Us 14/147; them 6/33 Mission Viejo (28-34): Us 15/129; them 11/85 Timpview (57-35): Us 8/91; them 7/50 Further, it seems jersey color has an effect on the perception of that aggressiveness. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/attitude-check/201610/do-uniform-colors-matter-in-sportsI doubt there are many zebras that head into a game thinking "which team can I screw over tonight". Just more a question of influence, and if there is any objective discussion about it.

I'm not sure it's safe to throw some actual data into a discussion about subjective officiating, but here it is anyway. These are our game scores and penalty yards for the past two years. We've been outflagged in every game except St. Frances three weeks ago, and the five discrepancies in red are a little hard to explain, especially for anyone who saw those games.
2022
Mater Dei 42, West 0 Penalty yards 35 to 28
Mater Dei 24, Bishop Gorman 21 116 to 97
Mater Dei 43, Corona Centennial 20 100 to 16
Mater Dei 35, La Mirada 0 82 to 40
Mater Dei 42, Mililani 14 ?? to ??
Mater Dei 21, JSerra 13 100 to 18
Mater Dei 17, St. John Bosco 7 ?? to ??
Mater Dei 48, Orange Lutheran 16 90 to 5
Mater Dei 52, Santa Margarita 7 54 to 40
Mater Dei 48, Servite 17 60 to 20
Mater Dei 54, JSerra 14 ?? to ??
Mater Dei 52, Los Alamitos 0 50 to 25
Mater Dei 22, St. John Bosco 24 57 to ??
2023
Mater Dei 28, Corona Centennial 14 95 to 65
Mater Dei 48, Bingham 14 119 to 20
Mater Dei 62, Creekside 0 55 to 37
Mater Dei 55, Kahuku 8 78 to 30
Mater Dei 20, St. Frances Academy 7 44 to 79
Mater Dei 49, Servite 0 134 to 35
Mater Dei 42, JSerra 0 82 to 82

Obviously MDDad you are cheating your way to constant victory!
I think next we need to discuss social biases, it seems pretty vogue to do so these days.... race, economic make up of a team? Where do we start and where do we end!!

Let's see now, how do I put this delicately? We are blacker and more Polynesian than most of the teams we play. So unless all the officials are white supremacists, we shouldn't be getting all the flags.
